Why is global warming happening?

I believe that we (humanity) are the cause for global warming. We have consumed billions of non renewable resources that release Carbon Dioxide that trap heat within the atmosphere, causing the earth to warm up. However, our government continues to act as if global warming is not a threat to our life, but in fact in my lifetime, our life will change forever.
